Three federal exemptions let eligible permanent residents take the civics portion in their native language.

50/20 Rule

If your parent is 50 or older and has been a permanent resident for 20+ years, they can take the civics test in French with an interpreter. They still take the full test.

55/15 Rule

If your parent is 55 or older with 15+ years as a permanent resident, they can take the civics test in French.

65/20 Rule

If your parent is 65 or older with 20+ years of residency, they study only the 20 designated questions and can take the test in French.
