Can you take the test in German?

Three federal exemptions let eligible permanent residents take the civics portion in their native language.

50/20 Rule

If you are 50 or older and have been a permanent resident for 20+ years, you can take the civics test in German with an interpreter. You still take the full test.

55/15 Rule

If you are 55 or older with 15+ years as a permanent resident, you can take the civics test in German.

65/20 Rule

If you are 65 or older with 20+ years of residency, you study only the 20 designated questions and can take the test in German.

Note: You will need to bring your own interpreter to the USCIS interview. This can be a family member or friend who speaks both English and German.
