Can your parent take the test in Tagalog?
Three federal exemptions let eligible permanent residents take the civics portion in their native language.
If your parent is 50 or older and has been a permanent resident for 20+ years, they can take the civics test in Tagalog with an interpreter. They still take the full test.
If your parent is 55 or older with 15+ years as a permanent resident, same benefit — civics test in Tagalog.
If your parent is 65 or older with 20+ years of residency, they get a simplified test — only 20 questions instead of 128, and they can take it in Tagalog.
Note: Your parent will need to bring their own interpreter to the USCIS interview. This can be a family member or friend who speaks both English and Tagalog.
